Mudjacking vs Polyurethane Lifting - Which is the Better Choice

Polyurethane Services Hattiesburg MS

Concrete is a sturdy material, but it’s still subject to a wide range of environmental stresses that can cause damage like cracks, sinking and heaving. Once these problems happen, they get worse over time. Fortunately, you do have options when it comes to repairing concrete. The two main methods to raise concrete are mudjacking and polyurethane lifting.

Let’s learn more about mudjacking and polyurethane services in Hattiesburg MS so that you can determine which method is right for you. For a professional evaluation, be sure to schedule an inspection with Foremost Foundations and Construction.

What is Mudjacking?

Mudjacking is also known as concrete leveling, pressure grouting or slab grouting. This process involves mixing together sand, cement and other materials, and then pumping it into pre-drilled holes to lift and level the concrete. It’s best for fixing concrete that’s already in good condition.

While mudjacking has its benefits, it’s not something we typically recommend. It doesn’t work well for slabs that are heavy or load-bearing. It can also cause more problems for severely damaged concrete because it can’t fill every possible hole. And, if the soil beneath the concrete can’t support the extra weight, mudjacking will not work.

Another thing to think about is where the concrete is located. The sand and mortar used in mudjacking is not waterproof, so we don’t typically recommend it for concrete that’s exposed to water.

What is Polyurethane Lifting?

Polyurethane lifting, or polyjacking, definitely has the edge over mudjacking. This high-density expanding foam raises and stabilizes concrete slabs. Small holes are drilled into the slab, and then polyurethane foam is injected into them to fill the voids below the concrete. As this material disperses, it raises the concrete and stabilizes it.

We recommend using polyurethane injections for large, heavy or sensitive concrete slabs. Some unique benefits that you get with these foam injections over traditional mudjacking are:

  • Will not break down over time like sand/cement

  • Long lasting solution

  • Quick drying times - great for concrete that needs to return to service

  • Less invasive because it only requires drilling small holes

  • Won’t retain moisture or pollute the environment

  • Can reach areas that mudjacking can’t

Which is Better: Mudjacking or Polyurethane Injections?

While some companies still offer mudjacking, we feel that polyurethane injections are far superior. Mudjacking has limitations and requires more machinery and more cleanup. Plus, water can get into the holes and cause further damage and settling.

Foam injections, on the other hand, can cure in just 15 minutes. They offer the benefits listed above, including being less invasive, safe for the environment and long lasting. That’s what makes these injections a great value for the money. They last much longer than mudjacking, saving time and money. The end result looks great as well!
